How to Play MapMelt (World Remix)
World Remix (mapmelt.com) is an interactive cartographic sandbox where you experiment with global geography by merging two or more real countries into original fictional nations. No account, registration, or tutorial gate stands between you and the map.
1. Three Interactive Ways to Reshape the World
- Mode 1 — MapMelt Drag & Reshape: Select 1. Drag & Reshape above the map, then grab any country with your mouse or finger and drag it anywhere on Earth! With True Size: ON, dragging countries across latitudes automatically adjusts their scale for Mercator/equirectangular distortion (so dragging Greenland to the Equator reveals its true size next to Africa or Brazil). Use the rotation (
±15°) and scale buttons to dock continents together, or drag one country onto another to automatically fuse them! - Mode 2 — Geo-Swap Positions: Select 2. Geo-Swap Positions and click any two countries (or click Random Swap) to swap their geographic locations on the world map—such as swapping Japan ↔ United Kingdom or Australia ↔ Greenland.
- Mode 3 — Country Fusion Studio: Combine 2 to 8 countries into a single fictional nation with a deterministic portmanteau name, synthesized 5-style heraldic flag, draggable composite silhouette, and verified World Bank statistics.
2. Selecting & Searching Countries (Including 31 Microstates & 207 Genuine Capitals)
- Click or Tap the Map: Select any country polygon directly on the interactive world map. Use mouse wheel, pinch-to-zoom, or the on-screen zoom controls to inspect coastlines.
- Instant Search Autocomplete: Small island nations and microstates (such as Maldives, Singapore, Malta, Tuvalu, Nauru, Andorra, or Vatican City) are marked with circular cartographic beacons on the map and can also be selected immediately via the search box by typing their name, capital city, or 2-letter / 3-letter ISO code.
- Major Capitals Layer: Click the Capitals button on the map toolbar to toggle golden capital city markers across all continents.
- Keyboard Accessibility: Every country on the map is focusable with
Taband selectable withEnterorSpace.
2. How Country Fusion Works
As soon as two or more countries are active in your fusion chain, the studio synthesizes a complete Official Cartographic Charter:
- Linguistic Portmanteau Name & Capital: Our deterministic syllable-splicing engine blends the constituent names (for example, Japan + Brazil = Japrazil, with capital Tokyilia).
- Chain Merging (2 to 8 Nations): Keep selecting additional countries on the map or search bar to merge your newly created nation with a 3rd, 4th, or up to 8th country. Use Undo at any step to step backward through your experiment history.
- Real-World vs. Fictional Silhouette Views: On the main world map, countries always remain in their true geographic locations connected by a dashed geodesic arc, never falsely implying non-contiguous countries share a land border. In the Charter panel, a clearly labeled Fictional Composite Silhouette artistically juxtaposes their real polygon shapes.
3. Deterministic Fictional Flag Synthesis
Official national flags are always preserved unmodified in the constituent breakdown list. Alongside them, World Remix generates a clearly labeled Fictional Flag derived from the vexillological palettes and motifs of the selected countries. Click Remix Flag Pattern to cycle through 5 heraldic modes:
- Diagonal Synthesis: Bipartite diagonal division with a heraldic fimbriated bend and central star medallion.
- Impaled Heraldry: Vertical vexillological impalement uniting each constituent's stripes behind a sovereign escutcheon shield.
- Saltire & Chevron: Cross-continental Saint Andrew's cross with a ring of stars matching the number of merged countries.
- Nordic Maritime Cross: Off-center Nordic cross blending primary and secondary national palettes.
- Triband & Celestial Emblem: Horizontal triband with a central diamond rhombus and radiating sun emblem.
4. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How does Country Fusion calculate population and land area?
World Remix sums verified 2023 figures from the World Bank World Development Indicators (SP.POP.TOTL for total population and AG.LND.TOTL.K2 for land area in square kilometers). If a territory lacks a reported World Bank indicator, World Remix displays Unavailable rather than inventing numbers.
How does the Daily World Challenge score my creation?
Every day at 00:00 UTC, a deterministic algorithm selects the same global geography challenge for all visitors worldwide. Your precision score is calculated from 0 to 1,000 based on how closely your fused nation's verified World Bank statistics match the target.
